Fangio’s Gordini to Highlight Artcurial Rétromobile

After a year away due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Artcurial is planning a grand return to the Rétromobile Salon this year, with several early competition car headliners already announced for the February 4 sale.

Among the star lots is the Gordini Type 18S driven by Juan Manuel Fangio and José Froilán González in the 1950 24 Hours of Le Mans.

This car is one of two built, both of which featuring aerodynamic bodies built of duralumin. Of the 33 Gordinis built of all types, this one is said to be in the most original condition, including the upholstery, which is the same as when the car was raced at Le Mans. It is also the only Gordini that retains its original “compressor” engine. The estimate on the car is €800k to €1.6m.

Alongside the Gordnini is the 2011 Peugeot 908 HDI FAP LMPI #07 — the turbocharged diesel-powered racer that took Sébastian Bourdais and Anthony Davidson to a win at the Zhuhaï 6 Hours and propelled Peugeot to six out of seven wins for the 2011 season. It was also the final run of the 908 in period, which makes it the most evolved version of the group.

This car has been completely overhauled by Peugeot Sport and has been with its current owner since 2017. It is estimated at €2.2m-€2.9m.

In addition to that, Artcurial will offer nine Bandinis from the collection of Dino Bandini, which he assembled as a tribute to his uncle and marque founder Ilaro Bandini. The cars include a 1957 Bandini 750 Internazionale that ran the 1957 Mille Miglia, a 1953 Bandini 750 Sport Siluro that ran in the 1953 Mille Miglia with Ilaro Bandini at the wheel, and a 1957 Bandini 750GT Veloce Berlinetta Zagato, which took first place in the 1959 Rimini Concours d’Elegance before being raced at Daytona and Sebring. All three of these cars feature 750cc power and a lot of originality.

The Lafourcade Collection

Four Bugattis from the Bruno Lafourcade Collection are consigned, including a 35C with historic racing provenance, a completely original 44 Faux Cabriolet with body by Labourdette, a Type 13 and a 37 “Petit-Coupe” reconstruction. Alongside those will be a very rare Alfa Romeo SZ Coda Tonda and a Giulietta Sprint Veloce Alleggerita.

The Lempereur Collection

And finally, 19 rally cars from the Lempereur Collection will be on offer as well, including a Lotus Cortina, a Sierra RS Cosworth and a Ford RS200.

“The Salon Rétromobile is the biggest and best-known collectors’ car show in the world,” said Matthieu Lamoure, Artcurial Motorcars Managing Director. “Our official sale at this event represents the best opportunity for a collector to sell his car at the highest price, in a very dynamic market, as we witnessed in our recent sale on 24 October.”
