Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion Accepts 400-Plus Entries

The annual Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion will be taking over WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca from August 14-17 — but the work to prepare for the event is already underway. Just this week, over 400 acceptance notifications went out to the final selection of entrants invited to participate in this year’s 50th anniversary event.

The cars that participate in this vintage racing demonstration are among the world’s best — these are legit racing cars that are both period-correct and have legit, proven racing provenance. The cars are chosen by a seven-person Advisory Council, along with the event’s sanctioning body, Historic SportsCar Racing, and are divided into 13 racing groups.

Some of the entries for the 50th anniversary event include the Williams FW07B that Alan Jones drove to win the Formula One World Championship, the Ecurie Ecosse team 1955 Jaguar D-Type and a 1991 AAR/Toyota Eagle Mk III GTP that Juan Manual Fangio II used to win 14 of 23 races.

This year’s event will also include a special Motul Golden Anniversary display that is designed to celebrate 50 years of racing on the Monterey Peninsula.

“Never before has such a display been assembled,” said Barry Toepke, a 35-year veteran of the event and director of heritage events for WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. “Cars are coming from private collectors, automakers and museums for a once-in-a-lifetime tribute to this remarkable event founded by Steve Earle in 1974 and known as the Monterey Historic Automobile Races.

“We are also welcoming back Marnix Dillenius, one of the drivers who raced in that inaugural event in his Alfa Romeo GTZ, and nearly every year since,” Toepke said. “Marnix has seen many changes over the years, including the lengthening of the track from its original 1.9 miles to its current 2.238-mile configuration. But one turn that hasn’t changed is the storied Corkscrew.”

The races continue to be a major destination for Car Week attendees — and both single-day and multi-day tickets are available, along with VIP access.
